Lily - 1987 Mk2 GT

Post by Cpt Custom » Sun Oct 07, 2012 4:47 pm

Having dipped in and out of this forum for quite a while now, I just realised over the weekend that I don’t actually have any information on here about myself or my car … so time to put that right me thinks!

My first Scirocco was a 1986 GT, which we called Poppy …

Image

We had her for nearly 20 years and if it hadn’t been for a break in at my workshop a couple of years ago which brought a bare shell restoration to an abrupt end I’d still be driving her today.

Sadly, because of the break in we weren’t able to conclude the project, but I learned much from the work we did on Poppy.

As it happened, just before we started restoring Poppy we visited an event at Harewood House and came across another lovely GT. E48 GRE was the opposite of what Poppy had become (pristine, low mileage and near immaculate) so when it came up for sale and we realised we could afford her we not surprisingly snapped her up.

That was in August 2010 and this was how she looked shortly after we purchased her …

Image

Since then, I have done some work on her, but it has mainly been superficial and what you might call cosmetic.

There was quite a bit of detailing tape on her, which I decided fairly early on to remove. Silver tape was removed from the bumpers and front grille while red tape was removed from the rear lights and the clear indicators were replaced with the original parts …

The biggest piece of work I’ve undertaken on her was probably removing the old soundproofing from underneath the bonnet as this had started to crumble quite badly …

Image

Initially, I planned to just remove the offending sections and replace them, but as there were some rusted areas to contend with I ended up having the bonnet resprayed before putting on the new soundproofing kit …

Around about then I also took off the vinyl sections from the B-pillars as they too were slightly damaged …

Image

And that brings us pretty much up to date apart from fitting a set of GTI lights and some rather unusual indicators that appear to have been made for the American market with those same lights in mind …

Image

I have to say I’m still not sure if I’ll leave the GTI lights on … the jury is out somewhat on that. You see they were originally bought with Project Poppy in mind, which would have been heavily modified and so may have suited the GTI lights better.

Time will tell.

Have admired this car for a long time now and it is nice to see her in all her glory on here.
A "labour of love" is an understatement, this car has been nursed like a baby and the results show.
Glad to see it settled in it's new home.
Hopefully meet up again soon.

Another cracking post from the Cpt.
I feel we should all do something similar so that there is a permanent record of our cars history.
This could be added to when the need arises likes serviced, MoT'd, new lights fitted or starter fitted.
I am going to start one for my car so would it be worthwhile starting a new section ("Members cars" for example) for this alone.
