Re: Where to start?

Went to re-fill the oil system today but noted that the source of oil appears to be the back right corner of the rocker box cover so I took the cover of. The stub was loose in the corner so no great surprise that it was leaking from there. There appears to be waves of tar like substance on the inside of the cover and an internal type cover. So spent most of the afternoon cleaning that up. the breather was totally blocked so I had great fun with the blowtorch setting fire to it. Now I need to get the rest of the external rust off it and paint it, any suggestions of paint type?

I also noted that the carb seems to be very flexible, should it move two inches easily? I suspect not. :( good excuse for the Weber then :)

Yes, the rocker cover and splash guard do get messed up. There is a better gasket you can use, I think it was redesigned for the mk3 golf. It's black rubber over a metal core. They work well, which isn't something you can say for the cork version.

The carb moving is likely down to the rubber mount, common problem I believe :)

The part number for the Mk3 Golf 'upgrade' is 026 198 025C.

Ordered one from my local VW dealer a few months back and it only cost around £20. Remember though that you need to replace your original studs with the slightly longer ones, which come with the Mk3 part.

Here's what you get for your money ...

Looks like a set of the standard studs and a set of the longer :)

Looks like VW Heritage are also selling this kit at a reasonable price ...

You'd have to see what their postage price is on such a small item though as that might make the dealer a better option.

Spent some time refurbishing rocker box cover, well making it not look like a pile of rust. Not perfect but an improvement (wish I had taken photo before I started)
