18" to 17" wheels on GT 1.4 TSi 92kw

Post by pegasus »

I read else-where that the ride is softer on this car with 17" wheels.
Is it possible to switch my 18" for 17", presumably the extra wheel arch space would be taken up with "chunkier" tyres, which, in turn, would soften the ride.
Finally, would I notice much difference?

Yes, that's one way to do it. I quite like the look with smaller wheels and lowered suspension...

Thanks for that. I have a chance of replacing my 18s with 17s but am nervous about going ahead without some guidance from some-one that's done this!!
The 17s come from a 2012, my car is a 2015, from the photos the wheels look exactly the same to me (ie. the profiles and the nuts).
Also will my existing spare match up with the 17s
Lastly, is it worth it??

It's not something that's commonly done really - most people are after bigger... That does mean you stand a better chance of picking up a set of 2nd hand 17s for good money!
There hasn't been any change of wheel dimension apart from style iirc. So you should be able to get some from an earlier non-GT spec car. They were called Donington btw.
