Cylinder head steel or aluminium?

Post by Madmicky »

Hey,
My car has just failed a carbon test so it's confirmed my head gasket is goosed.
The question I have is - the cylinder head on a 1992 1.8gt. Is it steel or aluminium?
I'm asking this as its been skimmed once already in the past and if it's an aluminium head, it can only be skimmed once!!
Can't really find much on the web.

If anyone can confirm which metal, much appreciated

Micky (sad scirocco owner)

It's aluminium, but why do you think it can only be skimmed once? :)

What symptoms are you suffering?

I've been told u can only skim it once but I'm gonna speak to more than one person to clarify.
Losing water, not a lot, enough to notice and car overheating. I've had it tested and it's definitely that head gasket.

That's OK. You don't necessarily need to skim the head just because the gasket has gone. But you do need to take it off to find out...
