In the trusty old manual on page 238 bottom right hand corner you will see a view from the engine side and as far as I know it is the cylindrical bit with about three wires connected to it.
It also shows it on page 239 Fig. 10.35 and is marked Series resistance (for three stages).
If you haven't a manual tell me and I'll stick a picture up that should help you.

This is the part number supplied for this item VAG PART NUMBER: 171905051B I haven't checked to see if this is the correct part number.

You could Google the part number and see what comes up.
Other options, place an ad in the wanted section here and on the register, check any scrapyards in your area or check other VW sites you never know you might just get lucky.
